Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) Training Now Available Online

The West Virginia Foundation for Rape Information and Services has announced that the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) Training for Adults and Adolescents, Part A is now available online. The mission of the West Virginia Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) training program is to ensure that all victims of sexual assault receive quality patient care and comprehensive medical forensic examination by trained medical personnel.

The SANE training provides nurses with the skills to assess, evaluate, treat and properly care for patients that have been sexually assaulted. The SANE training has a three-part blended learning format (40 HOURS) for those nurses wanting to practice as a SANE.

PART A: Online SANE Training (Didactic) – 24 Hours (FREE)

The online SANE training will take approximately 24 hours to complete. The online training is free. It is recommended that the training be completed within a 6 month time frame, but nurses have up to 12 months following the coursework to finish the coursework.

Part B: Classroom Training – 16 Hours (Registration Cost – $150)

Participants must participate in a 2 day classroom training following completion of the online training. Cost for the classroom training is $150.

November 5-6, 2014 – CAMC in Charleston, WV

Clinical Requirements – 25 Hours

25 hours of additional clinical experience is required after completion of the classroom training for nurses wanting to practice as a SANE. Nurses must work with a preceptor to complete the clinical requirements.

To Register and Access The Online SANE Training
  • To register for the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) Online Training for Adults and Adolescent, go to the WV Sexual Assault Services Training Academy at www.wvsasta.org/moodle.
  • Create a username and password as directed in the “Account Setup” process. Complete the profile information and the “SANE Survey”.
  • You will receive 2 emails. The first will confirm your access to SASTA. Click the link provided to activate your account. The second email will be sent within 48 hours and will confirm your access to the SANE coursework.
  • Go to www.FRIS.org for information about the SANE/SART initiative in West Virginia and detailed information about practicing as a SANE in West Virginia.
