Intermediate Fetal Monitoring Course

Instructor
This course is taught by Melanie Riley, RN, MSN, WV Perinatal Partnership Nurse Coordinator and WV Chapter of AWHONN Chairperson.

Description
This comprehensive 2-day instructor-led course is critical for enhancing and validating nurses and physicians’ ability to interpret and respond to fetal heart monitoring tracings.

Skills taught and knowledge assessed include:

  • Maternal and fetal physiology
  • Interpretation of fetal and uterine monitor tracings
  • Evaluation of auscultated fetal heart sounds
  • Leopold’s Maneuvers
  • Placement of fetal spiral electrodes and intrauterine pressure catheters
  • Evaluation of and strategies for enhancing communication

The course is presented to approximately 15,000 clinicians a year and may be used as a competency assessment to validate the knowledge and skills of perinatal clinicians who utilize fetal monitoring and includes a posttest to assess learner knowledge.

The WV Perinatal Partnership, funded by DHHR, the Office of Maternal, Child, and Family Health, and AWHONN  WV Section are partnering to offer this course for $55 (half the cost of the workbook).

The text entitled Fetal Heart Monitoring Principles & Practices is the primary reference for course preparation.  Instructors suggest that this text be reviewed before attending the course.

Intended Audience
This course is designed for clinicians who provide care for patients recieving fetal heart monitoring.  Participants must hold a WV professional license (MD, DO, RN, PA, CNM, APRN) and practice within WV. Some experience in an intrapartum setting is recommended.
